I. Youth Ambassador Guidelines

The Middle East Youth Initiative (MEYI) works with a select group of civically active youth who are tuned into their local communities and keen to communicate their personal insights on the social and economic inclusion of young people in their countries. Currently, communication takes the form of editorial pieces in our “Point of View” service on the MEYI website, but this role can evolve as the “Point of View” service on the website further develops and grows.

Editorials can be in either Arabic or English and will take the following forms:

  • Issue-specific discussions in key areas of employment, education, marriage, housing and credit, and civic participation. Feel free to present your first-hand perspective in any of these areas. It is also recommended that you raise questions to stimulate further discussion from a broad audience.
  • Accounts of personal involvement in programs and activities to help address the challenges young people face in your community. Information included on programs and activities must be accurate and any links to programs and projects must follow protocol and user guidelines. Feel free to include photos but please ensure that the photos are copyrighted (if photos are not yours). If people appear in photos, their approval must be granted.
  • Discussion of recent news and/or events related to youth and economic development. You can touch on current events pertaining to any of the five areas of focus mentioned above and write about observed impact on young people. You can present an idea or hypothesis based on your understanding of these events, describe local perception of these events and raise questions that generate input from the audience.
  • Personal journal on transitions from education to employment to family formation. This can be a regular diary that provides MEYI with a case study and improves the overall understanding of how young people spend their time during transitional periods.

Responsibilities

  • Submit editorial pieces for review. MEYI reserves the right to use its discretion in publishing pieces submitted. Editorials will be evaluated based on the subject matter's fit with the Initiative's mandate.
  • Play a proactive role in expanding readership and contributions to the MEYI website through local networks.
  • Agree to regular communication with MEYI staff to discuss participation in the Youth Ambassador program and related updates.
  • Collaborate with MEYI by sharing local perspectives on youth issues from your community and peers, and contribute perceptions and feedback gained from youth-related activities, events, conferences.

If you are interesed in becoming an MEYI Youth Ambassador, please send us your CV and a short writing sample.

II. General "Point of View" Guidelines

The opinions expressed in "Point of View'" editorials represent the views of the author and are not formally endorsed by MEYI.

Objectives

This service is intended to give an opportunity for the MEYI community to raise questions as well as provide perspectives and critical analysis on related youth topics. MEYI will be responsible for assigning the “Point of View” blog to experts/practitioners/youth leaders and will work with them on the submissions as needed. In all occasions, all inputs to this space will be moderated for quality assurance. The “Point of View” is an integral part of MEYI’s efforts to expand our outreach to development actors in the region and internationally, and to mobilize increased engagement in shifting the current discourse to address economic and social policies in the Middle East. “Point of View” achieves this objective by sharing and cataloguing a wide and rich spectrum of practical hands-on experiences as well as innovative ideas on what can be done to help meet development goals. “Point of View” aims to inspire, provoke and sustain debate, and provide know-how guidance by gathering news, resources and ideas.

Target Audience

“Point of View” targets media, youth leaders, academics, staff of international and local development organizations, government employees and civil society actors who care about the future of the Middle east and who believe youth have a positive role to play in promoting peace and prosperity in the region.

Blogging Tips

Make it fun. Blogging can be a pleasant activity, sharing what you care for with others. When reading the paper, watching the news, or listening to a presentation, think of ways in which current events might be relevant for the blog. If you are short of content, do a general web search, using standard search engines. Search for news using news.google.com or news.yahoo.com and set alerts on free news sites and search engines tracking key words for you. Identify and search other blogs for ideas and news.
