"Al-Shabab Awalan" Presents: Najah Diaries: Ihsan's Story

9 Jun 2008 in ,

"Al-Shabab Awalan" ("Youth First") series will share five Najah success stories in Point of View. The fourth is on Ihsan Jibran, a young man learned to overcome his own feelings about working and now is employed as a store clerk in Amman.

My name is Ihsan Jibrin and I am 25 years old. Many people would describe me as an ambitious young man with many skills and ideas waiting for a chance to apply them! I graduated from a university here in Jordan with a degree in English Literature / translation, leaving great memories and friendships behind …

After my graduation I headed to the labor market searching for an opportunity. I found many jobs within my academic specialization, but none satisfied my expectations; a lower salary was always offered to me. I used to rapidly quit work for reasons at that time appeared reasonable to me! At times I considered my manager as “ignorant” or “incapable” compared to me; the man who always knew better! At other times, my reasons to quit varied between misunderstandings with my colleagues; my incompetence; or my lack of commitment. I believed that the university gave me a lot, yet, something felt missing…

"I did not re-invent the wheel, but I came to understand myself; to understand “me”… I know what I have. I value what I do. I appreciate others. I believe in the present, with a positive eye onto the future."

The days passed by and I joined the Najah Program… Then I discovered that in most cases my problems were of my own creation. The program taught me how to deal and communicate with others in a more positive and productive manner, not only in a work environment, but also at home and within my circle of friends. Communication skills, presentation skills, challenges and values at the workplace, recognizing the community and appreciating its components, tradition and culture, those were the skills that we learned to understand and respect in Najah.

At present, and because of all the above, I work as a respectable clerk in the customer service dept at a well-known commercial chain in Jordan. At work, and because of my academic qualifications and my shaped-up skills, I became responsible for handling non-Arabic speaking clients, a task that requires attention and special care.

I did not re-invent the wheel, but I came to understand myself; to understand “me”… I know what I have. I value what I do. I appreciate others. I believe in the present, with a positive eye onto the future.

I understand that I still have a lot to learn. The only difference is that I know I have all it takes to learn, work and succeed. I hold the keys to my own success…
