"Economy 4.0," a new series launched by Marketplace that focuses on the global economy, featured commentary from Ragui Assaad in the story "Creating jobs in Egypt." Assaad argues that "The Maze" of regulations and red tape surrounding Egypt's business sector, combined with the high cost of navigating these legalities, proves a barrier to entry for new, business-minded Egyptians who cannot afford transaction costs. Growth of Egypt's private sector depends on reforming "The Maze" to make it easier for small business owners to enter the formal economy, raise capital, and produce much-needed jobs.
