Abu-Dhabi newspaper 'The National' features The Costs of Exclusion in a 4-part Series

19 June 2008

The Abu-Dhabi newspaper The National ran a four-part series featuring MEYI's recent publication The Costs of Youth Exclusion in the Middle East, authored by Assistant Professor of Economics at the American University of Beirut and former World Bank economist Jad Chaaban.  The series highlights the roles of the Dubai School of Government (DSG) and Middle East Youth Initiative in promoting the consequences of regional youth exclusion.

  • In Youth unemployment costs region Dh99bn, author Zoi Constantine quotes DSG research associate Paul Dyer, who describes the aggregate economic impact of youth exclusion as "quite startling," emphasizing that the costs are borne by society as well as by individuals themselves.  The article also quotes Jad Chaaban and DSG dean Tarik Yousef.
  • Op-ed Good reasons to do more for the young notes that although the study excluded the United Arab Emirates, its results reflect similar processes, and therefore the government of the UAE should use the findings to engage Emirati youth to engage themselves in the workplace, where they compete with foreign workers in an environment with high unemployment rates.
  • In UAE Cashes in on Youth Exclusion in the Region, Constantine uses the study to illustrate the movement of youth from across the region into the Gulf, where there is greater likelihood for finding a position. Paul Dyer cites the "openness and movement toward a more dynamic, flexible and knowledge-driven economy which opens new opportunities for young people," and the current state of economic exclusion as reasons in their home countries for why so many young people are leaving their homes and migrating to the Gulf.
  • The National has also posed the question 'What should be done to integrate the nation's young people into the working world?' and provided a space for reader responses.
